"think outside the box"
Thinking outside the box, this means working outside the limits. FreeBSD Unix computer systems, such as FreeBSD and his variants (PC-BSD, GhostBSD, FreeNAS, ...) do this for you. Illumos and OpenIndiana is based on Solaris-Unix is one another variant. Included is also the applications to build a world of functionality, to benefit of our work and interests. This applications also open a new horizon the users of Microsoft Windows.

What is Unix Marcelo?
The Unix Marcelo project is a form of knowledge & technology transfer for open- , free- and low cost computer systems. This including operating systems, applications and information over hardware. Computer systems based on Unix are the favorites.

06/2015 SmallWall the new m0n0wall
A long time ago, a very smart guy asked a very simple question. "Why do firewalls have to be big, slow, and hard to configure?" And he created m0n0wall.

"m0n0wall was a project aimed at creating a complete, embedded firewall software package that, when used together with an embedded PC, provided all the important features of commercial firewall boxes (including ease of use) at a fraction of the price (free software)."

At this, it was amazingly successful. So successful that the FreeBSD based core was used as a basis for several other projects such as pfSense, Askozia, FreeNAS, and nas4free. Recently, a grandchild of m0n0wall was spawned from pfSense, OPNSense.

But, m0n0wall has retired now, and some of us still feel the need for a small and lean firewall. SmallWall is that firewall.
02/2015 End of the m0n0wall project

After 12 years, the m0n0wall project has officially ended. No development will be done anymore, and there will be no further releases.

Alternative and similar products are (all based on FreeBSD):
02/2015 VirtualPF the firewall for the virtual world

This is a flexible and innovative firewall for the virtual world, with multiple enterprise features including load balancing and packet inspection and easy to use GUI. Built using the latest version of FreeBSD with hypervisor support. VirtualPF is a fork of pfSense for the virtual machine.

09/2014 pkg (new-pkg) is now the only package management tool on FreeBSD and FreeBSD based systems

The ports tree has been modified to only support pkg(8) as package management system for all supported version of FreeBSD. if you were still using pkg_install (pkg_* tools) you will have to upgrade your system.

The simplest way is
    cd /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/pkg
    make install

then run
    pkg2ng

You will have lots of warning, don’t be scared, they are expected, pkg_*  databases used to get easily mangled. pkg2ng is most of the time able to deal with it.

A tag has been applied to the ports tree if you need to get the latest ports tree before the EOL of pkg_install:
https://svn.FreeBSD.org/ports /tags/PKG_INSTALL_EOL

A branch has been created if some committers want to provides updates on the for pkg_install users:
https://svn.FreeBSD.org/ports/branches/pkg_install

Please note that this branch is not officially maintained and that we strongly recommend that you do migrate to pkg.

09/2014 New modern FreeBSD's Linux compatibility

One especially useful feature of FreeBSD is the operating system's ability to support native Linux executable files by way of a compatibility layer. An effort has been made to upgrade FreeBSD's compatibility layer to include a more modern Linux distribution. The choice was made to use CentOS as the new base for native Linux software. CentOS features long term support making it a more stable, based on RedHat, with an excelente suport for comercial Linux software. The Linux emulation port is called linux-c6 and can be found in the FreeBSD ports collection.

09/2014 Updating with Package Manager on FreeBSD/PC-BSD (TrueOS)

Due to some changes with how pkgng works, it is recommended that all users update via the command-line using the following steps:

# pkg update –f
# pkg upgrade pkg
# pkg update –f
# pkg upgrade
# pc-extractoverlay ports : only on PC-BSD and TrueOS
# reboot

PKGNG may need to re-install many of your packages to fix an issue with shared library version detection. If you run into issues doing this, or have conflicts, please open a bug report with the output of the above commands.

If you run into shared library issues running programs after upgrading, you may need to do a full-upgrade with the following:

# pkg upgrade –f

08/2014 Free Microsoft Windows Evaluation Software

If you need a Windows VM for occasional compatibility testing, especially for a project that will only last for a few months, this is an excellent option. You can download free 90-day evaluation versions of Windows desktop from Microsoft's TechNet Evaluation Center.

The latest version of Windows Server is available from the MSDN Evaluation Center and is good for 180 days.

All of these evaluation versions are full-featured, with no limitations during the evaluation period. In combination with VirtualBox you have a excellent combination without sacrifice hardware.
